Work Related Curriculum

What is the Work Related Curriculum?

The Work Related Curriculum is an exciting option available for Year 10 students.Students take vocationally specific courses for one day a week with other providers of training such as Northampton and Moulton Colleges; Starting Off and Aston Commercial Training.

The remaining four days are spent following GCSE subjects in the main curriculum areas and other accredited qualifications.

Why do we offer the Work Related Curriculum?

Research has shown that time out of the classroom to learn trades can positively transform students’ attitudes to education. This is especially true in the subjects of Maths and English, as links between the subjects studied and the real world of work become obvious. The main aim of the Work Related Curriculum option is to provide students with a background that is sought after by potential future employers.

It also provides a sound progression route into the highly acclaimed Vocational Faculty in the Sixth Form at Kingsthorpe College.Courses in the Sixth Form range from one-year Post 16 Certificates to Advanced level courses in the vocational areas of Business, Travel and Tourism, Health and Social Care and Leisure Studies. Progression can continue into Higher Education, where vocationally specific degree courses are increasing in number each year.

How do we offer the Work Related Curriculum?

Students following this path will make a double option choice for their Year 10 studies. It is a guided option choice, with dialogue between the Year Team, Tutors, parents and students over the suitability of students for the Work Related Curriculum.

Students will be given the opportunity to choose an appropriate course for them to take part in, but places are frequently limited on the very popular courses.

Students need to make their own way to the providers of these courses which are situated all around Northampton.
