Geography

“In Humanities our expectations are high and achievable. We are committed to enjoyable and diverse methods of learning and high achievement in outcome and examination results. Above all, we strive to create well-rounded and sociable citizens through the study of the past and the world around us. Our aim is to develop transferable skills, independence and the desire and capacity for life long learning.”

The Geography Department is an active and thriving curriculum area. We enjoy a strong reputation amongst both staff and students. This is demonstrated by a high take up at GCSE. We are committed to providing a varied, comprehensive and quality experience for our students.

Our vision and aims:

“Geography challenges, stimulates and widens students’ global understanding and perceptions of people and environmental relationships.”

The department aims to provide a stimulating and rewarding geographical experience for all and helps students become thoughtful geographers and independent thinkers. We see our key objectives as:

  1. To help students to develop their geographical knowledge and understanding.
  2. To introduce students to geographical enquiry and develop problem-solving and investigative skills.
  3. To help students develop a sense of identity through learning about the UK and other countries and the relationships between them which will help them to develop their own informed opinions and attitudes.

Fieldwork

In all our Geography courses there is a strong emphasis on fieldwork, both close to home and further a field. We feel that fieldwork opportunities are an essential part of a student’s geographical education. Locations include the London Docklands, Norfolk, the Living Rainforest, Kingsthorpe local study, Abington Park, Spain and Italy.
