London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games

Kingsthorpe College is a member of the Get Set Network!

At Kingsthorpe College, we are committed to using the values and opportunities of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to raise achievement across the whole school.

In 2010 Kingsthorpe College successfully gained a place on the Get Set Network. Get Set is the Official London 2012 Education Programme for schools and colleges.

Get Set aims to enhance learning across the curriculum and involve as many young people as possible in the excitement of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It aims to inspire people to get involved during the build up to the Games using the Olympic and Paralympic values.

In order to be accepted onto the Get Set Network Kingsthorpe College had to demonstrate a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values, as well as inspiring students through the London 2012 Games to get involved in Values-based projects and activities. One of the ways Kingsthorpe College demonstrated this was through the Gifted and Talented Olympic Club.

Gifted & Talented Olympic Club

The Olympic Club was run for year 7 Gifted and Talented students. The project was run as part of the Children's University, which is a national organisation that provides 7 to 14 year olds with exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours. Once the students achieve their Bronze, Silver or Gold award they attend a University style graduation at Northampton University.

The Olympic Club consisted of:

- 5 weeks of Olympic Country themed cookery (USA, American Muffins; Great Britain, Toad-in-the-whole; France, Ratatouille; India, Curry; Italy, Pizza)

- 5 weeks of Olympic sports (including archery, judo, boxing, table tennis and athletics)

The club was enjoyed by all the students, who took away valuable life skills and tried new activities.

The Countdown Begins...

With less than a year until the London 2012 Games begin, Kingsthorpe College is keen to continue a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values. We also aim to get the whole school involved in the excitement of the London 2012 Games!

This year we have dedicated a notice board in school specifically to London 2012 and Get Set. The Sports Council has contributed ideas, including a flip chart which is counting down to the start of the Olympics. It also includes up to date information on recent developments being made in the UK in preparation for the Games.

Students in the Sports Council have also been designing posters to put up around school to promote that the Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Northampton on the 2nd July 2012.

An Olympic Quiz has been given to all tutors at the college to be used during tutor time, to encourage everyone to learn about the history of the Olympics and plans for London 2012. The quiz has also been circulated around the local primary schools, to get the whole community excited for the Games.
